bulletVolney Godney WHEAT M.D. was born on 26 Feb 1810 in Bourbon Co., KY. (35) He died on 29 Sep 1867.(9) After his death Mrs. Wheat sold the home place in Bourbon County, and the family (with the exception of Orville P.) moved to Parsons, Kansas in 1872. Here a larger farm was purchased to provide the sons with land. The suggestion that this was done was made by Dr. Wheat in his will in which everything was left to his wife. He was buried in Paris Cemetery, Bourbon Co., KY. (9) Volney Wheat became one of the leading physicians in Paris and the surrounding countryside. Quoting from Norman Wood, a grandson of Jahab Wheat, a brother of Volney: "Dr. Volney Wheat ...as fine an old school gentleman and country physician as there was in the Blue Grass Region. He had numerous babies named for him and the longest funeral procession that ever entered the Paris Cemetery. I was there and I know."
The records of Transylvania College show that Volney G. Wheat of Paris, KY was a student in the graduate school of Transylvania Medical College during the year 1839-1840. Where he obtained his previous medical education is not known, but probably by means of tutelage. Further research may reveal this information.
Transylvania Medical College at that time was one of the two outstanding medical schools in the country -- the other being the Medical College of the University of Pennsylvania located in Philadelphia.
Dr. Wheat was always much interested in education. He was a contributor to the fund for the establishment of the Kentucky Agricultural College which later became the University of Kentucky. In his will he stated that it was his desire that each of his children should receive "an English education".
Dr. Wheat was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
On a visit to his brother Milton, a farmer in Adair Co., KY, he met the girl who later became his wife. Parents: Zachariah WHEAT and Elizabeth KENNEDY.

He was married to Elizabeth KENNEDY on 9 Dec 1791 in Bedford Co., VA. About this time the migration from the eastern seabord section of the country to the "wilderness country" beyond the mountains was in full swing. One of the many families who left their old homes for new ones in the "West" was the Kennedy Family, and Zachariah Wheat with his young wife, Elizabeth Kennedy Wheat, came with them.
With all their earthly possessions in saddle bags, they made their way thru the Cumberland Gap and up the "Wilderness Road" and "Boone's Trail", laid out by Daniel Boone a few years before, until they reached their destination in what is now Bourbon Co., KY. In this land beyond the mountains was begun a new home. The land was cleared and a cabin built, and here they rasied their family.
