Business was mostly credit. Principal customer was a Catholic boarding school & church. Paid on the barrel head. The KKK expanded to Lexington, KY and had a big rally outside Lexington. Two or three days after, the Monsignor asked him to bring over the bill for the month and paid him off. The Catholics attended the rally and took down license plates and reported all who attended. As a result of his attendance at this rally the Catholics cancelled their business and he went bankrupt. Parents: Orville Perry WHEAT and Mary Elizabeth LLOYD.

Basil WHEAT⁽⁹⁾. Three Wheats are listed in "Gwathney's Revolutionary War List" in Virginia State Library, Richmond, VA. They are Basdill (probably Basil), Jacob and Littlebury Wheat. There is no proof to show whether or not Jacob or Littlebury are sons of Charles.
John, Joseph and Basil Wheat came to Bedford Co., VA from Maryland during or at the close of the Revolution. First to buy land -- 1779. Parents: Charles WHEAT and Rachel WILLIAMS.

Captain William WHEAT⁽⁹⁾ Captain Billy Wheat is mentioned in an old history as having fought in an Indian War. Little is known of Captain William. It is said that his wife and two sons were stolen by the Indians -- a common occurence in those days. Parents: Charles WHEAT and Rachel WILLIAMS.

Charles WHEAT⁽⁹⁾ According to family traditions the progenitor of the Wheat Family in America was Charles Wheat who came from England and settled in Maryland. There is no record of the date.
It is said he had two daughters and seven sons, all Revolutionary War Soldiers. This information was obtained from a paper found in the possessions of the grandmother of a Missouri descendant.

John WHEAT⁽⁹⁾ died in 1806.⁽⁹⁾ He was buried in the old Wheat Cemetery, Bedford Co., VA.⁽⁹⁾ This cemetery is on the farm once owned by Joseph Wheat, brother of John and now (1954) owned by Edward Hazel Wheat, a brother of Mrs. Sallie Wheat Burks. It is located in a beautiful mountain valley known for a century or more as Wheat's Valley. John, Joseph and Basil Wheat came to Bedford Co., VA from Maryland during or at the close of the Revolution.
John and his wife Susan (Sookie) were originally from Maryland. Their history goes back before the Revolutionary Days.
John was a surveyor. On 11 Feb 1782 he purchased, for 1000 pounds, land in Bedford Co., VA from his brother Basil Wheat. This now (1954) a lovely farm owned by Norwood Burks, a cousin of Mr. Frank W. Burks, husband of "Cousin Sally" Wheat Burks.
It seems all the children of John and Sookie Wheat left Bedford Co. and presumably moved west to Kentucky. However Zachariah is the only one of whom we have any Kentucky record. Parents: Charles WHEAT and Rachel WILLIAMS.
